In my own classroom I would use blogging as a discussion tool. Often times in my classroom we work in large group settings, and when we discuss or answer questions it seems that the same five kids are the ones answering. I don't always get to hear or read my students' thoughts when they don't answer in class. By using a blog in class I get a chance to see into the thoughts of my students, all of them, and get a chance to assess their learning.
Blogging also will encourage my class to practice their formal writing skills as well as utilizing 21st Century Skills.
I hadn't thought about the democratic nature of blogging - that it really would give a voice to all students regardless of the time available for discussion! Helpful insight...thanks!
ReplyDeleteYour ideas to get everyone to participate relate to the discussions, I am having in my Distance Education class. The online discussions really help everyone have a voice in the class.
ReplyDeleteBlogging is a great way for shy or reluctant students to share ideas!
ReplyDeleteI too believe that blogging allows for those students that don't like to speak in the classroom due to several reasons, a chance to have his/her thoughts heard without the fear of public speeking and the fear of being judged by his/her peers.
ReplyDeleteI agree, students will not be afraid to share their thoughts on a blog. Just with D2l discussions I feel so open to share my thoughts, so I can imagine students will open up while blogging. On a side note, I love your set up! It looks so professional!
ReplyDeleteI also agree. Blogging is a great way for students who are quiet a chance to really speak their mind without being scared to talk in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteI liked your comments about using blogging to improve students' writing skills. This is a great way to work on writing skills using technology.
ReplyDeleteBlogs definitely lend a voice to students that don't always necessarily use theirs. I have found that for most of those kids, they tend to thrive with their discussion questions when I do a unit blogging assignment. I think it does them good to have that opportunity. Great ideas!
ReplyDeleteI agree with almost everyone's thoughts and yours! The same students like to answer questions because they are confident in verbalizing their answers, however, some who may not always answer may be able to communicate their thoughts better by writing instead of speaking. It definitely would allow you to give a chance to everyone to give input into a discussion. Great thoughts!
